Should I learn X12 or EDIFACT first as a new EDI analyst in the US?

I just got hired as a junior EDI analyst at a manufacturing company that sells both domestically and to European customers. Most of our training material so far is X12-focused. Is it worth self-studying EDIFACT now, or will I pick it up naturally once I'm deeper into X12?

Get comfortable with X12 concepts first since that's what your day job needs immediately — envelopes, loops, segments, elements all transfer conceptually to EDIFACT even though the syntax (delimiters, segment names) is different. Once you're solid on X12, EDIFACT is much faster to pick up because you're learning new vocabulary, not new concepts. That said, since you'll be touching European trading partners, it's worth at least reading through an EDIFACT ORDERS/DESADV example side-by-side with the X12 850/856 equivalents so you recognize the pattern when it shows up in a support ticket.

Also worth knowing: if you're in automotive-adjacent manufacturing, you may run into VDA (German automotive EDIFACT subset) or Odette on top of standard EDIFACT. Ask your team now whether any partners use those so you're not blindsided later.
